why is the upgrade bigger when downloading, than the ubuntu cd in the first place.
surely it does not install new programs? or does it?

I think reason for that is because everybody add programs to customize system.When you upgrade to the next release you upgrade system,meaning with all added software be upgraded.

It does install new programs in a manner of speaking. The CD contains a base set of programs that by the time you install your system need to be upgraded anyway. The downloadable upgrade is the base CD plus the upgrades to the software.

Think about this, every time you install Ubuntu from the CD it tells you there is updates for your software available. Add the size of those updates to the size of the CD and it will equal the size of the downloadable upgrade.

so it won't be out of proportion, when the upgrade is ca. 300mb bigger than the base cd install?
