Why are CompactFlash and SD cards known as 'memory cards'? Cos they're not memory, are they? They're storage. Right?

Coz they remember stuff.

I wouldn`t worry about it.

Not that I think you actually worry.

Because somebody thought it was a good idea.

3.5" disks weren't floppy either.
CDs aren't "compact".
Zip disks didn't use zip compression.

I always thought they were "flash cards," and I thought "memory card" was a misnomer.

True story: Some non tech-savvy person I know said she had got these "memory cards" for her laptop, but she had no use for them. She asked if I wanted them, and I said yes (figured she was probably talking about a compactFlash or something,) but they were actually a pair of 2 Gib RAM sticks which fit in my laptop!
