Dont get me wrong...I'll never go back to windows, but it looks like Im going to have to for at least a few hours. GF has ubuntu on her laptop and I run Ubuntu on all my machines. She has a TomTom GPS and is in dire need of map updates. As it seems TomTom Home does not run in WINE and has iffy results in VirtualBox...so i might take a spare HD and slap Windows on it and do the updates for her (she really has no idea how to do them in the first place, windows or not).

So add TomTom Home to my list...along with iTunes (she wants that too  )

EDIT: If hers has wifi though, I probably can just connect it to my router @ home and update it from there though :)

Doesn't that suck when a linux device won't work in linux? This guy seemed to have better luck

I use it under VirtualBox, the PUEL licensed (non-free) version direct from http://virtualbox.org/ and it works fine.

A response from TomTom

Their answer:
Dear costumer

Thanks for getting in touch with us

TomTom gets more and more inquiry's if there will be made a TomTom HOME
version for Linux soon. It is not currently planned, but they are open
to it if enough users wants a Linux version.

TomTom HOME runs under wine, but it cannot detect the device.
What kind of emulators have you tried?

Please encourage more Linux users to notify us that a TomTom HOME
version should be made. My colleges here at TomTom relays the inquiry's
to me and i will relay them to the management and try to convince them
that it is not good costumer support to ignore Linux users.

With regards,
Tomtom User support.

It appears to be alternative firmware fot the gps, like rockbox for the ipod and homebrew for the wii. I've tried out the rockbox and homebrew. I haven't played with OpenTom.

doubtful...it's still WINE based and if WINE doesnt work in Ubuntu it's not going to work in React either.

thanks for the move, mod.

Are you talking about updating the maps or updating the software?

Because at least our Tom Tom has the maps on a SD memory card. Paying for the software download doesn't really make sense, they'll send you a new memory card for pretty much the same amount.

Yes, instead of asking for support, complain about it. It'll get you everywhere.

maps, and I was under the impression I can just hook this thing up to TomTom Home and update the maps from there.

I plan to do that.
