For those that don't know, recursive acronyms are like 'GNU' : 'GNU is Not Unix' and 'JACK' : 'JACK Audio Connection Kit'.

Yeah, I think they're pretty cool.

I don`t like them or dislike them.
They exist.
It`s a bit like A flat. I don`t care about it in itself. But when composers/musicians use it in a piece of music then it can be beautiful.
But only in context,
A flat is not beautiful.
But it can be.
If used in the right place.
If you see what I mean :)

Are there any non-open source software projects that uses recursive acronyms.

Yes, I like them. They are too cute by half.

I do not like them, because for an acronym to recurse it requires the first letter to be arbitrary and thus meaningless.
I want meaning in things.
I guess it is theoretically possible to have a recursive acronym where the recursion wasn't the first letter, and thus no letter would be arbitrary. I would like this.
For instance, I could name a program TMAPIT, which stands for:
The Most Awesome Program Is TMAPIT

The first letter is not meaningless because the acronym is a whole

I like what you did there.

No, because I always want to know what G stands to GNU and J to JACK etc.

Madspyman agrees definitely stop proposing your meaningless acronym names.

No I don't like them. To me they are quite the opposite of clever.

As a lifeguard, I find acronyms very useful. ABCs, RED, RICE, SAMPLE, are acronyms that help us remember the First Aid procedures quite well :)

Yes, that one's nice, though it took me a minute to figure out if it was legitimate. Which is good. If it requires thought, it must be good.

Recursive acronyms are not limited to computing terminology. For example:
* TIARA — TIARA is a recursive acronym
Some organizations have been named or renamed in this way:
* BWIA — BWIA West Indies Airways (formerly British West Indian Airways)
* GES — GES Exposition Services (formerly Greyhound Exposition Services)
* LINK — Link Interchange NetworK, the UK ATM switching organisation.
* Saab — Saab Automobile Aktiebolaget, formerly part of Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, also known as Saab.
* VISA — Visa International Service Association
* ADAP — ADAP Discount Auto Parts
* Heil — Heil Environmental Industries Limited, maker of garbage trucks
* KLuB — Klub Linux Bandung (Linux Club of Bandung city)
* RAS - RAS Acronym Syndrome, the recursive version of RAS syndrome; in which the last letter is repeated as its own word.
* OIL — Oil India Limited
