refresh gone bad

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 a couple of days ago from Karmic. My laptop has become virtually unuseable: the refresh rate seems to have dropped to something like a 3-5 second interval.

I'm running a Toshiba Equium (L20-197) with 2G Ram

Any suggestions?
