I am just wondering if there is a opensource program like Finale. I am in to making my own sheet music, but i also like to get MIDI's and convert them into sheet music.

There's various programs, personally I have never found any of them to be very easy/simple but also allow for slightly complex music. I find lilypond the best, but it's almost like coding, so may not be for you...

I have installed a program called NtEd from the ubuntu software center. Haven't worked with it at all. Cant tell you if it is good or not. Finale is one of the few reasons I keep windows on another machine. (Just got rid of windows on this one). Good music notation software is hard to come by even in windows . . . Finale didn't work well in when I got a new 64 bit machine, but it did work. As a matter of fact, after I got the 64 bit machine, I tried to find some good notation software for Windows, and couldn't find any. They may have an upgrade by now . . . haven't looked in a while.

This is an old thread, but hopefully I can be helpful. Aside from Rosegarden, I would consider MuseScore (http://musescore.org/). It's in the repos and also has updated versions on a PPA. I personally use Frescobaldi (http://frescobaldi.org/) to type up Lilypond scores, which is also in the repos.

After upgrading one of my machines to Natty, I wanted to install lilypond. Didn't find it in the sofware center. Instead found Frescobaldl. This is absolutely great. It is lilypond, with a complete programing environment with the text editor, the compiler, and the preview all available on one screen. I no longer have to keep open gedit, the terminal, and a nautilus window and a ps file at the same time to work with lilypond. Frescobaldi makes working with lilypond much easier. After a failed compilation, the text editors will point out errors in the code. I'm just scratching the surface in learning to use this; I'm sure there are features that I will use that I haven't discovered yet. It is really not a GUI, but as I said, an environment geared to writing, compiling Lilypond code and printing music. I'd like to give it an A+.
