remember that game the fsf + community donations wanted to buy for 170k? it was Ryzom, and it actually looked very cool, but the courts awarded the game to a german company.

now the same game has gone open source!

So, does Ryzom have a native Linux client?

Woohoo! I'm definitely going to have a look at it when there is a native Linux client.

Hate to rain on the parade, but only code and texture parts of Ryzom got opened. The data files are still propriatary, that means whole virtual world needs to be redone. And before it can be readone, they have to shed dependence on propriatary 3D tools and do required work to enable loading project in Blender.

Practicaly, only engine is liberated.

Per this site:

http://dev.ryzom.com/wiki/ryzom/HELP_US

It looks like the tools are free software as well. And from the news post it says that the models and animations are CC-BY-SA.

Well the big issue of course is it only runs on Windows. But it looks like the [original] developers themselves have done some work to rectify the situation. It seems possible to build the game on Linux. The latest commit seems to address a Linux issue: http://dev.ryzom.com/projects/ryzom/repository

So a Linux client isn't really vaporware at this point, but it looks like they want help.

Textures and models CC-BY-SA, but world and maps are propriatary dat files. It is huge work to make new maps.

Tools (which came with game) are opensourced along with the game, but what I meant when I said "it's dependant on proprietary tools" was 3DS MAX. But they are moving to Blender. That should go more quickly than remaking maps.
