hello, im running ubuntu 10.04 with gnome kubuntu and xfce gui's ( i like variety ), but my son if in elementry school and they use mac, I'm not sure wich version but there computers are no more than 2 yrs old. I dont want to confuse him to much with diffrent operating systems, and i cant afford to buy a mac. If it is at all possable can some oen tell me where i can get a mac like gui, and tell me how to install it, or how i can modify one of the existing versions of ubuntu's gui's. i realld would appreciate the help. than you for your time.

Take a look here.....

Here you download the Mac4Lin theme that works well on Lucid. To get the latest version of the Global Menu do this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install globalmenu

Then you can right click the upper menu bar and add the Global Menu.

I've been using this theme for almost a year now and am very happy with it.

Let us know how you get on.

It would seem to me that having two things that look the same but contain slight behavioral differences might be more confusing then two obviously different interfaces to learn.

Just a thought.

I agree.

I disagree. If he's used to a Mac, he's probably most used to a dock at the bottom and a toolbar-type interface at the top. This is fairly easily replicated in Ubuntu, and beyond that most of the common functions are fairly similar so long as he's not installing applications.

How old is he?

If he's kindergarten through third, go ahead and use the mac interface, it shouldn't be too different for an end user his age.

If he's fourth or fifth, a different interface is probably a good thing.

And another thing to think about is most families have mac at school and windows at home. It was always like that for me when I was younger, and it wasn't really confusing.

The pricing of macs is gradually dropping. Some models are actually low-priced compared to PC's of similar specs. I like OS X Snow Leopard. However because of its PC limitations, I can't have it everywhere. I only have 1 macbook.

I'd tend to agree with earlier posters... if it looks like a Mac but is different (because it's Linux) then it's more likely to be confuse rather than help.

When I was younger I swapped between RiscOS, Mac OS Classic and Windows 95 with no ill effects, I'm sure your son will be fine.

when I try to run 'sudo apt-get install globalmenu', I get

E: Couldn't find package globalmenu

even though the first two steps went smoothly, and I assume adding a repository means the computer should be able to find the package. is there any reason the globalmenu package is MIA?

That is a Hacked Mac OSX and it is extremely illegal from my understanding. The best thing to do would be to just follow this guide.

Except where it says to use Avant window manager I would recommend using cario dock because it looks better and it runs a lot smoother you just have to take off some of the applets on it.

Running mac os on a pc is against the EULA of apple! And you will get no support from apple!

It is however legal to buy a copy and install it on a pc if you wish. They cannot tell you what to do with it once you buy it!!

Now if you go and make software that removes apples software protection like psystar did and try to sell it then the software police will come knocking at your door...

Its just the same as an OEM copy of windows is to die with the hardware, if your motherboard fails by terms of the EULA you are to purchase a new copy of windows as the hardware is dead. No one does this! they will replace the board and reinstall windows. The OEM cannot even transfer a windows key from one board to another except under warranty work! Every refurbed pc you will ever see should have two windows keys on it!!

but back to the point,

A Mod like this would not be for the faint of heart. And the only support you will get is help files and how to files some computer guru typed up. So if you feel up to it, it would be your cup of tea!

OOO yea BTW

A Mac Theme is just as illegal if not more than installing Mac os on a pc,, as you are violating visual copyrights. People have already been sued by apple over this!! No end users were ever taken to court but the people who made the software locked horns with the big MAC !!
