I'm on a notebook with out the ability to boot from USB & a broken CD/DVD

I've done various installs by using a HDD adapter & my pentium III pc
the 9.10 install had no sound & it was suggested that 1.0.04 would probably fix that

I burned a CD from a bit download, did a fresh 10.04 alternate i386 install the HDD would work in the PC, but not in the notebook [froze after the unbuntu with progress bar underneath]

I did a fresh install of 8.04lts & added a extra 30g partition, fully updated, been using it for a few days, everything seems cool
I think there is a way to use UNetBootin, to boot from a different partition on the same HDD, as if I were using a live CD/USB file

I installed gparted, UNetBootin & am downloading 10.04 desktopi386 from a bit right now

I have a couple of comments from another thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9157980&postcount=14)
suggestions?
