When I start my laptop it just shows the grub menu asking for which OS I want to boot but it is completely frozen and pressing any key doesn't work. The only thing I can do is just it down again.

This happened after I used Darik's Boot and Nuke to completely wipe my hardrive. Then I used a ubuntu live CD to fully install ubuntu on my laptop. There is no other OS on my laptop other than ubuntu so I don't know why GRUB is showing. I'm assuming this has something to do with me using the Boot and Nuke program and then installing Ubuntu because I've installed Xubuntu before over windows and it worked fine.

Was I suppose to format the hard drive or something before I installed Ubuntu?
Should I just try re-installing Ubuntu?

Any suggestions?
Thanks.
