In order to be able to concentrate, I would like to have an applet (or script) to temporarily disable notifications.

In the same spirit of Caffeine (http://ubuntu-tweak.com/app/caffeine/) which inhibits the screensaver when activated.

I saw this tip, but would like something which does not require reboot : http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/9302/Disable-notifications-in-Ubuntu-Jaunty

Thanks for your suggestions.

Just a thought, what if you just kill notify-osd?

Thank you for your answer.
But it looks like it gets restarted (maybe by messaging menu)

I also tried to "kill -STOP" and "kill -CONT" the notify-osd process. Unfortunately it then prevents to adjust volume...
