Indicator Applet Mail Icon

I'm using a tablet computer in portrait mode and had to switch to Thunderbird because of display layout issues. I would like the mail icon on the top menu bar to refer to Thunderbird but have not been able to figure out how to do so. Does anyone have any suggestions?

As far as I am aware and judging from other posts on this subject, this cannot be done. Apparently the mail icon only works with the standard mail program installed in 10.04.
