Anyone know of a see-as-you go character widget?

I'm typing up a story in episodes, and each post must not exceed 2048 characters. Does anyone know of a plug-in where I can watch a meter counting the characters? This would help me enormously as it will help me to see where I am, at what point to be half way through the episode, and to judge when I should begin winding it up.

At the moment I'm doing each episode in a gedit file and using Tools/Document Statistics to see how many characters I've used. A meter I could view out of the corner of my eye would be a wonderful aid for me.

Open office has "writer" in it which has that and all the other tools of a full word processor. Excellent program which I recomend highly. Simply use that instead and choose the appropriate file extension when using "save as"
