10.4 alt install questions

I am going to try to do a recovery with the 10.4 alt disk to try and repair a broken 10.4 install.

Is there and option to just load basic generic video drivers in the 10.4 alt disk??

If i cant do a recover will a fresh install erase any personal files on my hd??
