I downloaded Ubuntu desktop 10.04 iso and burnt it onto a CD. When i click on 'upgrade' on my Karmic system with update manager it gives me the option of downloading files from the internet.
I want the update manager to pick the CD ROM or iso which is present locally. I even followed instructions given here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading). Doesn't work.

Can someone help ?

According to this link.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

you need to
Upgrade Using the Alternate CD/DVD

(not the desktop Live CD)

which you can get here

It works now. I was able to upgrade successfully, albeit with lots of issues that need fixing. Thanks andrewthomas.

Please help. Because mine is a fast connection. But sometimes slow.

1) Can you please tell me how did you upgrade?

2) How this is happening? I want this. First ubuntu looks a package in the Alternate CD-ROM and if it is not there, then only it must go to internet. Is this like this?

Use update manager to upgrade to Lucid. Once you put your CD in, ubuntu karmic should identify & mount the CD. Once you click on upgrade on your update manager, it will throw up a few dialogs and say that it wants to download some pieces.

Godammit, every time there is a major Ubuntu release I go through this same **** - I have just downloaded the cdrom ISO that Ubuntu's web-site shoves in your face when you click to downloaded the OS, only to discover that I cannot even upgrade with it from 9.10!!! These damn releases seem to be completely orientated towards pimping Ubuntu to new users (fresh installs) & to hell with existing users just wanting to upgrade...

FTR, I have 3 PC's with Ubuntu that need upgrading so the 'recommended' upgrading online (which is moronic as you practically are downloading the full ISO anyway) would be just a huge waste of bandwidth.....

Surely the Ubuntu boffins can devise a way to seemlessly install afresh or upgrade from a single ISO release...

Even though I have 10.04 added via 'Software Sources', Ubuntu ignores the cdrom and insists on downloading the whole lot again. So at least in my case the "some pieces" is over 600meg! Utterly frustrating...

I wish I knew! What's worse, if you follow the 'upgrade' link posted above, you are not given an option to download an 'upgrade' ISO, just the same stupid on-line upgrade recommendations. And to top it off, the 'Download' button on the Upgrade page downloads the same frigging 'Desktop' version - at least there is no file-name differentiation. Completely asinine...

PS - After a little more reading, it appears things have moved from asinine to absurd - the below thread appears to indicate that to upgrade to 10.04, you need to have downloaded BOTH the Alternate & Full-Installation CD's. What kind of idiots are responsible for this...
