I have a Lenovo ThinkPad with 10.04. I use a docking station/port replicator to connect it to an external monitor via a KVM.
When I have it like this, I want just the external on. Windows seems to take care of this automatically; if the lid is closed, that screen is off.

Ubuntu on the other hand, will sometimes do that. Sometimes only the laptop screen will be on. Sometimes they're on with the same resolution and image on both screens.
Furthermore, Ubuntu won't recognize the right resolution for the external screen unless it works right from the start. It won't give me any option to change it to 1440x900, just 1024x768 and the like.
I went to look at the xorg.conf file, only to find that there isn't one. Not hidden, not even empty. Does not exist. On another tangent, trying to Ctrl-Alt-Fx into a tty just freezes everything.

Since my battery life is basically non-existent under Ubuntu (whole different story, that), I'd like to at least be able to use it properly at my desk.
