All I hear about now-a-days regarding technology is faster processors, better graphics cards, etc etc. But are there any semi-recent discoveries that are really exciting? Nanotechnology, new fuel source, plasma shields, anything?

I want the future to be now. :p

There may be, but it is still top-secret military technology (like the internet and cell phones were not too long ago)

On the other hand, this may interest you : Life Probable on Remote planet (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/070424_hab_exoplanet.html)

CPU = stagnates until x86 is dead
GPU = 15-30% faster then the last generation massive speed updates <3
Monitors: Stagnates until LCD dies off in favor for FED and CED, and 4:3 becomes popular again..........
RAM = Its not bad but.......... it is not goood either

Sorry it's not a product announcement, but still pretty engaging:

I would rather love a stable, fault free, lightweight, quiet, and low power computer with NO software bugs, costing less than a hundred bucks!

This would be REALLY technologically exciting! Why wait for the next utopia?

Cool, thanks for the link. I enjoyed reading it and I'll have to try that out some time.

Off the top of my head, talking to people I know who do research:

Wireless distributed computing.

Progress is being made on how to bind carbon nanotubes together into something longer.

Scientists are now able to take "photos" of molecules under certain conditions.

When a carbon nano tube is heated at one end, electricity will be generated in it . The discovery is made by the researchers at mit about 2 or 3 weeks ago . The news is on the mit site .

Also, here are two technologies which get me pretty excited:

Racetrack RAM:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racetrack_memory

Diamond semiconductors:

The future's gonna be awesome.

see, every time i hear about a "game-changing" technology, it is specifically designed to surveil people, and reduce their rights. not every technology needs to assist homeland-security or corporate control freaks.

someone invent a technology to limit the power of private institutions and the folks that want to use anti-terror laws to prosecute jaywalkers.

That "diamond processor" article is amazing, as well as the fact they're creating real diamonds for $5. That ought to crash the market.

I'm curious about something (it's my inner sci-fi geek,) but have there been any recent advancements in force fields/plasma shields? I've always wanted a personal shield. :p

The Terrafugia Transition, a roadable aircraft (flying car) can fit in a garage, drive on roads at 65 MPH, and has a range of 460 miles at 115 MPH in the air. Best part? It's in production and the first one will be finished next year.

Oh, it will. But there's been a concerted effort by the diamond mining industry to discredit, downplay, and suppress this research. When it goes mainstream, the next phase of the suppression will be to claim that "natural" diamonds are somehow better. However, this isn't true; the synthetic ones have fewer defects.
