Post screenshots of your custom netbook desktop

I going to load Ubuntu back onto my Acer Aspire One 9" and I need some ideas. You see I've tried UNR and while I can appreciate the design, I jst don't like the UI.

Since I have found so many great ideas and tips from the monthly screenshot thread I thought a similar thread for netbooks would great.

So please post your screenshot, with a list of your tweaks and added apps,

have you tried lubuntu?
you can select normal or with lxauncher.
uses lxde, which is a custom openbox setup so it's light.

i think the screenshots cover everything from desktops to netbooks.
it's just a matter of getting creative & seeing what you can use to get the look you want.

i'm still messing with my lubuntu setup, today i thought i would make me the gnome menu bar, i'm using xfce4-panel in mine instead of lxpanel, xfce4-panel allows me to use gnome applets with the xfapplet plugin, so i can do a lot of things.

i personally never found the netbook launchers that great, there just not customizable enough to me.

i'm running the gnome-main-menu(aka: slab menu) but i'm working on getting that gnome menu bar look, then i'll probably dump that. i haven't gotten around to doing the "Applications" section yet. you maybe thinking why don't i just run gnome, i don't like the new gnome, just certain features & looks. here's some pics.

the scrolling is interesting now, you can just drag it up/down.
i still can't use the normal "netbook-launcher" on my system, it still locks up completely, had to hard power off. i can use the lite version(netbook-launcher-efl) just fine though.

you would think they would have at least put a "Desktop" section in files to show whats on the desktop, it should be Desktop-> Folders -> Recent Files
media still shows on the desktop & it would be nice to know whats there & even be able to use the desktop underneath the launcher, that would even allow say the trash icon to show.

Other apps that aren't shown in the picture I use are: chromium (web browser), thunar (file manager), leafpad (text editor), squeeze (archive manager), ristretto (image viewer), and pidgin, and vlc.

It's the openbox menu. In openbox you right click anywhere on the desktop and it shows up.

Ibidem I like it. I've been debating going with a minimal install and building from there. I've been intrigued with enlightenment, but my skill and knowledge isn't quite up to the challenge.

qchapter: Theres alot to say for a clean and straight forward desktop. Right now while I'm playing with mine netbook I'm leading towards a setup similar to yours, except my panel is on the left. Trouble is the network indicator applet is tending to be way oversize.

For the Acer Aspire One you should try Kuki. Kuki has a custom kernel for the AA1 and full hardware support from the moment of install time.

That's pretty cool Warpnow. I'm not a big fan of XFCE but your setup is where I'm going using Gnome. What's the dock that you're using?

For me right now I'm finding that the Gnome desktop is a bit much for my acer. Video is choppy and there is a lag for apps to start etc., while usable it would be nice to get a bit more pep to the system.

I thinking of using the minimal install method and building my own, except I'm not sure of what packages I would need. And tutorials out there?

This is a XUbuntu 10.04 with ubuntu-mono-dark icon theme, changed icons for missing ones and really a lot of hand work done. Compiz was used instead of xfwm4. Console is MS Aero transparent-like.

This is ubuntu UNE, tweaked to hell. Something a lot of people don't seem to realise is that when you boot into UNE and select your username to login you can change the Session (at the bottom) to GNOME and get a default Ubuntu desktop. I did that, removed the gnome-panel entirely, set up AWN and compiz, installed the ubuntu satanic edition packages for themes and here we are :)

Ubuntu 11.10 was a tad too slow for my liking on my netbook, so I put Lubuntu on it. Now it flies.

thats what i thought at first but then i upgraded to 2gb ram and installed preload. works great. have you tried that? if you haven't it might be worth considering the upgrade cost me around $25 and only took about 30 seconds to install the ram

For anyone that has a netbook with 1 GB of RAM I highly suggest upgrading to 2 GB. It makes a big difference.
