Theme resets on boot up

I have a funny problem with Lucid. Every time I boot up, it reverts to "no theme". Meaning, it's the original, square, blocky grey panels and huge text. I have to go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance each and every time I boot the machine.

How do I get the theme to stick?

I still can't get the theme to stick. I'm having to reset it every time I boot up. If anyone has even a remote idea of why or how to fix it, please share.
