Which Ubuntu release do you use?

Hi everyone! Since Ubuntu has been around for a while, I'm just wondering if there is information out there that says the percentage share of the different releases (e.g. 25% use karmic, 75% use lucid, etc....)

No purpose really...just wanted to know for personal interest. Maybe if there isn't info, I can start a poll?

Oh, and please reply with a quick message as well to keep this thread alive!

I have 7 computers.

3 of them (so far) use lucid, one, my wife`s (hey it works and I get nervous) uses karmic, one uses Debian and the other 2 use either Debian, some derivative of, or maybe slackware, zenwalk, puppy, moblin or who knows.......? (they both have a ubuntu/debian partition).

I also have 7 DESKTOP computers.
3 are now running 10.04 (with NVidia proprietary driver issues on one .. so am running default at present until NVida removes it's head!)(and Skype is dead in the water on it, too .. this too, shall pass!)
Running two XP machines that never go on line except for updates or to upload processed data to my on line storage. Used primarily for photographic work, PDA sync, and instructional DVD's.
One Mythbuntu 10.04 that still has hardware issues .. but not as many as with previous builds.
And one Mint 8 .. awaiting Mint 9 (testing box to test programs.)

Got Lucid on all my family's computers, and gonna' get it on some friends' soon since some of them are afraid to upgrade by themselves. And, well, backing up is a pain for noobs, and some don't wanna' upgrade through the update manager, which is understandable.

10.04 on my desktop, which is not running very well as it was an upgraded to crrent release RC build that is having some issues.

9.10 on my HTPC because 10.04 and the included version of MythTV are having major issues with my hardware.

8.04 on my work laptop because its the last version to support older pre-HD ATI graphics cards, and I barely ever use Ubuntu on it, unless I need to get around work's proxy server which blocks so much cool stuff.

Then my netbook runs 9.10, because I just haven't had time yet to update it. I kinda don't want to either.

The girlfriend insists her laptop remains with Vista installed, even though I keep extolling the virtues and speed of Linux - but for me, I've got one laptop and a desktop running 10.04 and a second laptop running Windows XP.

...although that'll be 10.04 soon enough too - I've had enough of Microshaft...:o

I think I'll skip 10.04 and go directly to 10.10.

I was anxious to get off 9.10 for a lot of reasons. That release always seemed half-baked.

I'm running 10.04 nbr/lxde on my netbook for now. NBR is a little sluggish, even with 2gb of ram, but it has more polish than 9.10. I'm waiting to goof around with eeebuntu 4 which is Debian-based this year.

On my primary laptop, I am running 10.04 x64.

On my htpc nettop, I am running 10.04 x64, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm thinking about moving back to x86 to get flash10 and because I only have 2gb of ram in that machine.

My main desktop is 9.04 server edition with an XP partition "just in case it's needed" (unlikely), my laptop is a triple boot of 10.04, 9.04 and Vista, and my old desktop is a CLI version of 6.06.

edit: a couple of annoyances with 10.04 but it's not the end of the world.

I use Lucid on my 6 year old Dimension 3000, which duel boots with XP. Finally got my wife to give Ubuntu a try for her email and Facebook. Installed the beta2 and have been updating on a regular basis with no significant problems.

On my 8 year old Inspiron 4100 notebook I've been using Karmic for a couple of weeks. With only 256 mb memory, it's a bit slow, but not annoyingly so.
I'm thinking about giving Xubuntu Lucid a try, just to see if that works OK.

Finally, on an 11 year old Dimension XPS T450, which I like to try different distros on, I'm currently running Ubuntu Karmic. With a 450 Pentium II and 640 mb memory, it's really in over its head with Karmic. Mint 8 LXDE and Fluxbox ran just fine, but I just had to see what it could do with Karmic.

I've been cleaning up a few nieces' Windows machines for a few years now when they're almost unusable because of viruses and malware. My latest project involved a clean of Vista on a Dell notebook (Celeron processor, 1 gb memory:confused:) for a Facebook-aholic niece. I did a wubi install of Ubuntu Karmic for her to try out. She loves Ubuntu now and only uses Vista when she needs to print something, since her Lexmark printer doesn't seem to want to cooperate with Karmic. I'll can't wait to do the same with Lucid for my next niece with a problem...shouldn't be a long wait!!:P

Upgraded the desktop to 10.04 yesterday, working very nicely - big thanks to the work of the nouveau team for helping me eliminate the nvidia binary driver.

Laptop is needed for something fairly important tomorrow, but I'll update it after that. Laptop uses KDE, and testing with the liveCD revealed support for some pretty good desktop effects OOTB on an ATI chip :)

Currently I'm using 10.04 on my Laptop. Before that I use 8.04. I'm just sticking with LTS releases since they last longer.

I still use 8.04 on my mother's computer. I tried to upgrade it to 10.04 recently, but she had some speed issues while browsing the net, so I put 8.04 back on. Though if I need to upgrade it, I guess Xubuntu would be better.

I'm still using CrunchBang 9.04 on two of my older computers. Waiting for the next stable release to migrate them to Debian-based CrunchBang. Karmic did not run well on my hardware and I haven't had an opportunity to test-drive Lucid yet.

I really like the overall look and feel of Lucid, but there are a few showstopping issues which, for now, keep me from upgrading from Karmic. These have already been reported on Launchpad, but so far have nobody assigned to them.

Of course, it has been a policy for quite a few Ubuntu users (myself included) to wait at least a few months after release before committing to a distribution upgrade. We've learned quite well from the GCC debacle presented in 6.06...

I started on 8.10, upgraded to 9.04 on its release day, and just moved to 10.04 (and Kubuntu) two days ago.

Ubuntu 10.04, and I would use Xubuntu as well but apparently it removes Ubuntu if you try to install it? At least that's what the package manager said.

I won't ever touch KDE again, it just isn't my thing.

Unable to upgrade using my Internet connection :( Waiting for the purchased 10.04 cd for clean install. No regrets! I'm satisfied with 9.10 which runs smooth on my machine for both Gnome and KDE:P

All three of my Linux machines now run Lucid.

Info and specs:
One is my oldest machine, a desktop running Xubuntu 10.04. Its specs are: 1.8 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD. It dual boots with Windows 2000.

The other desktop has been running Ubuntu 10.04 since beta. Its specs are: 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD. It dual boots with Windows XP.

My laptop is running Ubuntu 10.04. Its specs are: 2.0 GHz Pentium Dual-Core, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD. It triple boots with Windows Vista and 7.

as far as i know the server edition for LTS Dapper Drake is supported for 5 years

Just because support has expired does not mean you cannot still use an older version. It will still run but will never be updated with bug or security fixes.

Updating is up to the user .. I have one machine that only goes from LTS to LTS simply because once it is tweaked to my liking, I want to keep it stable as it is the Big Kahuna in this place. Others I will update from release to release in order to check out and get familiar with new features. Those machines process little data and are not critical to my operations.

I will say that I am EXTREMELY pleased with 10.04 and think that the developers have done an outstanding job on this one.

Mine Triple boot xp win7 and Karmic koala.My wifes laptop win7 she only understands windows doesnt see the point in linux thinks Im nuts but we all know its great here!My computer never ever hardly gets booted to windows anymore Linux rocks still amazed by Ubuntu been using it for 4 months honeymoons not over yet for me still amazed and want to learn more!Her laptop has been good with windows 7 I put panda cloud antivirus and malwarebytes anti malware and run the browser in sandboxie so it stays clean.As for me no antivirus needed everything just works!

Right now I am running Karmic on my desktop. My wife and daughter are also running Karmic on there laptops, but mainly because there have been wifi issues with Lucid that we are going to wait out. I myself am running Lucid on my laptop dual booted with Windows 7 and there are a lot of funny issues to deal with.

I have 10.04 on my laptop.

I wanted to install 10.04 on my wife's eeePC 701; however, a few weeks before 10.04 was released she ran out of disk space. It was running eeeBuntu. I put a SD card in it, and installed Ubuntu 9.10 UNR. I put the OS on the SSD and /home on the SD card. I take the SD card out once a week and copy the contents to my laptop's disk. That is a nice way to backup her data. I am giving her time to adjust to the switch from eeeBuntu to Ubuntu 9.10 UNR before upgrading to 10.04.

Then I have 2 computers that are still running 9.10 because I just don't feel like taking the time to upgrade them. They are primarily used by my grandchildren to play games, watch Cartoon Network, and things like that. They don't need the newest stuff as long as things like Flash work. :)

I have two other computer running hypervisors (virtualization). They are connected to big screen TVs. They run both Microsoft Windows and Ubuntu 9.10. They are used to watch streaming Netfix and so on. That requires Microsoft Windows. One has Vista and the other Windows 7.

I think it's better that I not use Lucid until I can find out how to fix that problem, since if I can't connect to the Internet, I can't really find out how to fix my Internet issues....I was just sick of being kicked off the Internet randomly.:mad:

I'm on Lucid on my laptop, the only problems I've had are from trying to install things that aren't in synaptic, or from messing up some sort of configuration. I get my hands dirty in a lot of that stuff, and I don't really know what I'm doing haha. Worst part is, I never keep backups because I know that if I really mess up, just pop in the install disc and start over :P

I use the latest stable on any machines I own. On machines I recommend or install for folks I use the latest LTS with wireless backports.
