hi,

I'm planning on getting a new laptop in the coming month or two. But i don't want to buy a windows installed laptop and convert it to Ubuntu. Two reasons. First, some component or other keeps giving trouble while working with Ubuntu, (e.g. my wireless card never worked easily till 9.04 came out). Second reason, I don't want to donate to the profits of MS.

Is there a way of buying a new laptop without having windows preinstalled on it?

Certain manufacturers sell them without windows, but I don't know any in the US. If you're gonna go in a store to buy a laptop then it'll be tough luck to find one without windows pre-installed. Last time I bought my laptop in LA and couldn't find a single one w/o windows, when I asked about it people looked at me as if I'm stupid.. (What are you gonna do with a laptop without windows, sir? Naturally I turned around and walked away, mumbling "idiot..")

@steveneddy do you happen to know a store like that here in europe? (Specifically The Netherlands)

Would be really appreciated.

Unfortunately computers preloaded with Linux or that have no OS at always seem to be expensive.

Just a guess:
Large scale OEMs pay little for the OS, and their costs are offset by trial software (advertising). It would actually cost them extra to install Ubuntu since they would need to provide support.

OEMs that specialize in Linux have a smaller market presence, so their product costs more per unit.

Choose supported hardware and PC just works without the tweaking by the end user to get it running right.

Linux is free so there are no kick backs or incentives to install Ubuntu, unlike Windows.

Save your money and support the community. It's worth it in the end.

True, they are a bit on the pricy side. But i guess i'd still rather go with something like this. Thanks for all the links.

They actually have a "none" option in the OS section - encouraging.
