View Full Version : Ubuntu website home page omissions

I don't know about you, but I feel that there are four serious omissions from the Ubuntu home page (http://www.ubuntu.com/) and the assorted download pages.

It's hard to find the system requirements for Ubuntu, even from the download pages.
When you do finally find the system requirements (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/desktopedition), it tells you what you need for the installation, but not what you need to actually run Ubuntu!
There isn't even a hint of the existence of Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Gobuntu or Kubuntu. I would have thought that Xubuntu, especially, was important for people with older computers.
Nowhere does it mention how to verify your download (the MD5 sums (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes)). People quite often seem to have a problem with the download itself -- and then blame Ubuntu.

I'd like your opinions; and maybe I'd like to report these ideas to Ubuntu (in the brainstorm section, perhaps?).

Maybe these could be addressed in the redesign (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Brand2) we all assumed we would have by now but haven't with no explanation as to why

EDIT: Got a response just now
However it was not possible to get it done before Lucid's launch in a way that would convey the reliability and quality that people associate with an LTS release. The new branding work is in progress still and we look forward to launching it as soon as we're able.

Agreed. Further more, it would be nice to have a VERY visible page/link on the ubuntu site for people running in to trouble. On that page they could mention the most common problems and links to possible solutions, explain how to access the boot options in lucid, as well explaining they can come here for help, but where relevant should provide at least some basic information like output of lspci/lsusb (tell them how to get it).

Im gettng tired of posting the same over and over again

(and it doesnt help my mood some canonical designer hid grub, hid the live cd boot menu and replaced it with an utterly meaningless (to me) icon because it looks neat. He should be forced to reply to threads here for a week, maybe he will understand what he did !)

@Merk42: Thanks for the reply. It's good to know that redesign is in progress. I think it's really important if Ubuntu is to attract a wider audience -- first impressions, you know!

@P4man: Perhaps you could create a Brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/) for the your complaints?

I've created a report for this.

Thanks for the advice.
