I kind of have been playing around with a way to market Ubuntu and I did a brainstorming session and came up with this concept. Ubuntu is smart, Ubuntu is free, and Ubuntu is about freedom, really. So I thought how do I associate what I feel about Ubuntu with some images, and I though of great minds, great people in our history who might (we'll never know for sure) appreciate Ubuntu's message and philosophy. So I drew up some concept images:

What do you think? (of the idea, not the art :P) :)

I love it. I set the Aristotle-blue as my desktop. Great idea. I guess the only thing is to make sure the graphics you're using are public domain.. other than that, I'd love to use these for my local team

None of those people have ever even heard of Ubuntu. If you would put up pictures and names of celebrities who live today or died less then 70 years ago and claim that they prefer Ubuntu without their permission then you would risk getting sued. I guess not only the works but even the identities of people who died long ago are in the public domain but it is still not correct to claim that they prefered Ubuntu.

All the images I used came from Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page).

Glad you guys like it. I want to develop some more stuff, maybe try out some banners and such.

...it is still not correct to claim that they prefered Ubuntu.Yeah that's true, but that's not what it says. It says 'Great minds prefer Ubuntu. Not 'Albert Einstein would have prefered Ubuntu.' :)

It just...doesn't make any sense. None of those people have any connection with Ubuntu or Linux. The juxtaposition of the image of a famous thinker like Aristotle with the message "Great minds prefer Ubuntu" clearly implies that the person is an example of the message, which is a complete falsehood. Aristotle didn't "prefer Ubuntu."

Yeah that's true, but that's not what it says. It says 'Great minds prefer Ubuntu. Not 'Albert Einstein would have prefered Ubuntu.'This is disingenuous. The implied statement is clear.

On the other hand, if you were to say "Great minds prefer freedom" or something similar (something you could actually associate one of these figures with in good faith), then it could actually work. You wouldn't directly associate the person with Ubuntu Linux; you would associate him (truthfully) with an abstract concept people normal associate him with, and then associate that concept (truthfully) with Ubuntu.

Keep trying.
