I am pretty much an Ubuntu novice and have just performed a new installation of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 i386 on my machine.

When it installed the default resolution was 1024x768. I installed the nVidia drivers for my graphics card (GeForce 8400GS and restarted the computer. When I did the resolution is stuck at 640x480. I have tried changing the monitor size in "Monitors". That will allow me to change the monitor to 1024x768 but the resolution remains the same.

Ideally I would like to set the resolution to 1280x1024. Can anyone help with this?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar issue after doing an upgrade. With nVidia sometimes it needs the drivers installed manually. I found the link below via google. Also, you probably should view the [ubuntu] Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience sticky at the top of this forum. You will see other people's examples, do a thread search for nVidia.

I am not an expert, the people on this forum have saved my systems on many occasions. Like I said, the following link worked flawlessly on my machine.
