View Full Version : Ubuntu 10.04, the new themes and elementary-theme.

Ubuntu 10.04 seems good. I don't use none of the "Social from the start" features, and I find annoying that everything uses the notifications. I keep deactivating those, It's distracting to have a notification when a new tune starts to play, when a new file gets uploaded on filezilla, when a three falls in the woods...

But, the theme, I can't stand the theme... and believe me, I've tried.

http://www.inatux.com/ubuntu-10.04/screenshot-5.png

I don't mind the buttons on the left, although by having them there I lose real state on Chrome using the Ambiance Theme (https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/elnmibmpefhmfgphdphdncoogpbfmlbp?hl=en-us).

I think the problem is that I find dark themes depressing and somehow manage to remove all kind of productivity on me. I've tried with the Radiance variation but that looks worse. As bad as old computers look now (yellow ish).

Whoever did the new corporative image for Ubuntu and Canonical did a good job, whoever did these themes... you need to try harder.

Thanks god you can easily change themes! Although not perfect, elementary-theme (https://launchpad.net/~elementaryart/+archive/ppa) is way ahead Ubuntu 10.04 themes. Feels fresh and lightweight and, for some reason, I feel much more inspired to create stuff. And looking at the new mockups I can't feel less than excited.

I've attached how my desktop looks with elementary-theme.

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the new release (10.04). Since this is not a debating section of the forum, I will not comment on your opinions.

I do hope you find some redeeming qualities in the new release. As it's been my experience that no theme will satisfy all users.

Good Luck

Yes, the dark themes are good. But i think the themes should be lighter or cooler to the eye since the ubuntu rebranding is now based on "light".
Something that uplifts the mood and make you more productive.
Just my opinion dude.

Hhhmmm...i think this thread better fits in the community cafe?

True, can somebody please move it to Community Cafe?

Thanks!

It's from this video:

I got the background from the making of files:

I've always thought gnome-colors/shiki-colors would make a PERFECT default theme. its pleasing to the eye, has dark theme elements, but the usability of a light theme and has lots of color schemes to choose from.

I need help installing Elementary. :(

mrdoob
May 12th, 2010, 10:06 PM
Add this PPA: ppa:elementaryart/ppa

Then look for the elementary-theme (either in Synaptic or Software Centre) and install that, then go to the Appearance settings and you'll find it there.

Okay, I have Lucid but the exit, minimize, and maximize buttons are on the right now. :( I like them on the left. How do I do this?

1. Press alt+F2 and type "gconf-editor" and press enter.

2. Navigate through apps->metacity->general

3. In the box on the right, double click "button_layout"

4. Change the value from "menu:minimize, maximize, close" to "close, minimize, maximize:menu"

5. Hit Okay

6. If you ever want to change it back: "close, minimize, maximize:menu" back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

simple google search found this :)

I'll give a go to the buttons on the left myself too :) Sooner or later I'll have to get used anyway.

Although I don't like too much how Chrome looks with Elementary GTK+ :/

Seems like the latest (dev) Chrome uses the gtk config and places the close/min/max buttons on the left if it's configured like that :D

Here's the thing though. For me, I have often tried dark window borders and menus but I just can't work with them. I find them too distracting and they highlight how much space the panel and the toolbars and the window border take up on the screen. And there's just too much contrast between a dark theme and most web pages for me to use them comfortably. I have tried dark themes so often and I just can't get to like using them.

killall -9 notify-osd

Bye-Bye forever annoying notifications.

...If you ever wanted to turn them back on just do:

sudo chmod +x /usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd

I like some of the notifications. Wireless connected. Message from someone while empathy is on the background...

I'm just saying that it's configured in a too-much-information way.

I like Ambiance, but the color choices felt very flushed out and not as vibrant as I'd like. I ended up looking in the code and changing a few hex values based on colors I thought that worked better.

I like Ubuntu and I liked the earlier colour themes of earthly tones... unfortunately my stomach turns at the sight of the colour purple...

I have changed the purple/aubergine background, and later replaced it... but where can i change the initial purple screen when the machine boots up, prior to login?

I would like to boot my machine with Ubuntu more often, as it is a lovely system, but I need to bypass this purple stuff!
