Very low sound in Ubuntu

Searched google and found out this problem has been around since the late nineties. I could not find the answer. I know I've seen it here on this forum but can't find it. Help!

Use mixer as it is described here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1439009&highlight=iMac) to adjust volume.

Adjusting volume possible to do the same way as it is with microphone.
