Video Problem Installing 10.04

Downloaded 10.04 (64 bit) and when I begin the install routine, the screen looks like some kind of 40 column folded over thing that's nearly impossible to read. Kinda worked through it but it's pretty bad and the end result after the install completes, which it does just fine, is too unreadable. This is on a clean install on a spare hard drive so no damage done. Computer is a HP laptop with Nvidia graphics which work fine with 64 bit 9.10.
