I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and always at the 1024 768 screen resolution.

I just finished installing version 10.04. It defaulted to 1280 1024.

I much prefer the 1024 768 because it is better for my older eyes, but when I attempt to change, the screen goes black for a minute and then stays at 1280 1024.

Since earlier versions of Ubuntu did it, this should also, but...

Hopefully someone has a suggestion.

Thanks, Chejose

Information about your system / graphics card, etc please?

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Numpad- may temporarily allow you to drop resolution; if it does not work, reverse with Ctrl+Alt+Numpad+

Thanks for responding

I am afraid that the graphics is part of the system board, a dual Pentium. But it is the same system that I had yesterday with Ubuntu 8.04 and it worked fine, so should not be the problem.

Well, by tweaking font size and bar characteristics the visual result is acceptable.

So I will close this.

Also I thought you could press ALT,CTRL and the plus or minus symbols as well. IDK I haven't used this method in years?

I had a similar problem that it would not let me change to a lower resolution. I run a separate partition for /home that did not contain .config folder because it wasn't mounted at install. I copied it from the saved /home_backup that was at play during install and now I can set my resolution. Ensure you are the owner of this folder. -- ken
