After start up I get a blank screen that says "Ubuntu 10.04 LTS name-desktop tty1"

"name-desktop login:"

I type my log in and password and it gives me the last time I logged in and says "Linux name-desktop 2.6.32-21 -generic #32-Ubuntu SMP (a date and time) x86_64 GNU/Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS"
"Welcome to Ubuntu!"

Then it says "name@name-desktop:~$"

It doesn't load beyond this point. I've typed various thing and it does nothing. Please help.

Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7. Anything happen? If not, then try running 'sudo gdm' and post the output.

Im having the same problem, when i press ctrl+alt+f7 nothing happens, however when i do sudo gdm it does bring back up the graphical log in screen however i have no mouse, keyboard, or touch screen movement so i am unable to log in, this is the same case with sudo startx, it loads the graphical interface but i have no control what so ever.
