I am unable to install the 10.04 x64 desktop release code.

There is a failure message displayed very briefly on the terminal just before the GUI launches, but that is lost at that point. It says something about "failed due to unknown user id".

Then it launches the GUI and gives me this error:

"Installation failed: The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."

I am running the installer on a system with 9.10 x64 installed and running fine. The live CD portion of 10.04 worked fine, and may I say that the desktop is beautiful.

After a couple of tries I found that if I hit the space bar when the installer puts up the first graphical screen, the one with the incomprehensible graphic at the bottom (I think it means clean the fishbowl) I get the installation menu and am able to select "Install Ubuntu". It gets to the partitioner and reports: This computer has no operating system on it". I select the manual option and this is what pops up:

It has misidentified my drives. This is what I have installed under 9.10:

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x33a833a7

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 9561 76798701 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 9562 28684 153605497+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 28685 38410 78124095 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 38411 38913 4040347+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sdb: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000abe09

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 38913 312568641 7 HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/sdc: 959.9 GB, 959925190656 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 116704 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x8329fd4b

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 116704 937424848+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

It has moved /dev/sda down to /dev/sde.

I aborted the install at that point and shut down. When I rebooted to 9.10, I had no network! My card showed up but it had no IPV4 address. I had to reboot and then overwrite the network config using the network connection GUI to get the network back.

So far, it looks to me like this release is toxic. It can't do what 9.10 (and 9.04) could do, namely finding my disk drives. It makes changes to the installed system before the install even really begins, so you can;t even fall back to the old one.

I would advise anyone thinking about installing this release to hold off and wait for one that is a little better tested.
