I'm trying to install 10.04 from the alternate install CD on my laptop with the SiS Mirage 671/672 GFX chipset. I'm using the alternate CD because I want to encrypt my entire hard drive from start. With the 9.10 alternate install I managed to get to the install screen by adding vga=789 (as described at http://www.greenhughes.com/content/change-vga-mode-kubuntu-kde4-remix-beta-alternative-install-cd) but now all I get is a flickering screen. I have tried most of the modes at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers but all gives the same result.

Please help :frown:

I have the same problem. I've installed ubuntu 10.04 with normal installation but the SiS driver that i used in ubuntu 9.10 does not work with this version. In the loading and in ttys i see a flickering screen..

The error that gives me at start GDM is:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/sismedia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "sismedia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No driver avaliable

anyone has a working driver for 10.04 version? or should i go back to 9.10?

Where did you find the Alternate Install CD?? Ubuntu seems to do a great job of hiding it better each release...
thanks...

hrharr0, thanks for the info and location... any idea why they hide the alternate CD, which I believe is more important? after all, it's the CD used for upgrading, what I thought would be more desireable for Ubuntu, meaning folks are using the OS....

I really need this information... I have SiS Mirage 672, my question is: If I install Ubuntu 10.04 with alternate CD, graphics work after install (at minimum resolution)?

Thanks in advance!

@merlinof2
it's not really hidden, you can found it in ubuntu's page...
go to ubuntu.com, go to download (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download), after the choose location, you have a link that sais:
Alternative download options, including Ubuntu installer for Windows
there you have:
Text-based installer

it wasn't that hard to get there for me.

@jodlajodla
after i installed ubuntu (not with alternate CD) graphics worked (using VESA driver) but tty's didn't work, but i solve that with the link i posted before. I strongly belive that it will work the same way installing with alternate cd... i guess you'll have to try...

EDIT: I don't know if Alternate is text-based only but if it is
and you really prefer to use the alternate install
try this;

(although you won't be able to see what you do, commands will still work)

echo blacklist vga16fb > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-vga16fb.conf

followed by

update-initramfs -u

and then;

reboot

When not using the alternate cd , wait a few minutes; the screen will show up and ubuntu will be installable;
the flickering is with plymouth and tty only and above commands will solve that bugled.

For all info about installing the sis 771/671 driver: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=958967&page=38
read all about it here;

There are several solutions for a variety of problems on that thread. What specifically did you do?

@StOnes

He downloaded the driver for 10.04 and installed it the same way as I did in my post on that page;
post; #365

In post #371 on page 38 I even made a explained version, or like lulacLilla called it... "an idiot's guide"

btw; I don't see several solutions, or the variety of problems you seem to see on page 37 where hrharr0 linked to.

I have a Packard Bell easynote MH35 equipped with the sis mirage 3 672(crappy sh*t !!:()
I got the 2 files :
sis671_drv.so
sis671_drv.so
from Here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BWDFFI47)(http://estebanordano.com.ar/sis-m671m672-driver-for-xorg-xserver-7-5-on-debian-sidux/) (http://estebanordano.com.ar/sis-m671m672-driver-for-xorg-xserver-7-5-on-debian-sidux/)

Then copy the too files from your Downloads folder (/home/user/Downloads)into /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers using :

sudo cp /home/user/Downloads/xorg-driver-sis671-0.9.1-fixed-build/sis671_drv.* /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/

then using the terminal, edit the xorg.conf file using :

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change the "Device" section with "sis671" then save and exit.
Now restart your box and things should be fine
