Yes, 5.1 is ******. Yes, ambisonic cubes etc are better. But it's a standard, and all software/movies etc use it, and there's nothing I can do about it. Besides, this room won't work for anything better.

Anyway, I'm working on a 5.1 preamp/amp/speaker set. So now I need a soundcard.

I need a soundcard that must:
1. Be recognised correctly by pulseaudio, so I'll be able to watch 5.1 movies without starting jack and doing wierd connections
2. Be recognised by jack, as I also do sound editing/ambisonics
3. Not sound like farting in a bucket, I don't want anything super-hq but I want something that doesn't suck tooooooooo much.
4. (Optional) An ability to turn off any built-in processing like enhancements and 3D virtualisation would be nice.
5. Price: $8-$20

I stumbled on the Creative X-Fi 5.1 external sound blaster and it looks promising, but I don't know to what extent it's supported. Has anyone used it with JACK?

Or could you recommend something else?

There are also loads of C-media cards. Are they any good?
