I'm currently using Skype to do calls and video with my girlfriend. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (soon to be 10.04) and she uses Windows 7 (or sometimes XP).

I'm not satisfied qith the video quality: the video often gets stuck ad one has to start it again, over and over. Are there any multiplatform alternatives which are better then Skype as far as video quality is concerned?

have you tried SIP? on linux the best SIP client is probably ekiga, but there is also empathy. lots of choices for windows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SIP_software#SIP_clients

as it is an open protocol, all the clients can talk to each other.

Uhm, I should have made my question more clear. Of course I know there are many alternatives, and I can find even more by googling a bit.

I'm asking here because I want to know from people who actually tried them which solutions are better then Skype for the video.
