Anyway i can upgrade off a cd instead of update manager?

it downloads WAYYYY to slow

You mean download the 10.4 cd?

but wont that wipe out all my apps/data/etc?

If you are to upgrade without using the update manager then you have to use the CDs.
If you are to use the "normal" CD then you have to lose your data and apps.
If you are to keep your data and apps then you have to use the alternate-CD for upgrading.
