To start, I have a dell c840 laptop (old), upgraded all hardware to 1.5 GB RAM, Pentium P4 2.4 GHz, unknown brand 60 GB HDD, GeForece 440 Go (driver: 96.43.13), internal Intel wireless, loaded with 100% Linux Mint 8 x86 non-partitioned.
I Notice that Mint is slow and lags when opening windows up, using Firefox (3.6.3)... I have tried messing with stupid Dell bios with speedstep, on vs off. It seems to be faster when its off but the CPU runs at 30-50% at idle either way. Bios notices that it has a 2.4 GHz but says it runs at 1.2 GHz... Could the slowness be due to a crappy HDD or a crappy install of OS? Are there any free linux speed tests for the CPU?
