Hi, folks

I made a Kubuntu 10.04 LTS VMware virtual machine, and I think it may be useful for people who are curious about Ubuntu and just want a "taste" of it.

Following is a brief information about this virtual macchine:

Ubuntu 10.04 KDE4 desktop
=========================

File Name: kubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386-vmware-20100429.7z
File Size: 572 MB
MD5 Checksum: a7d8c52c3ff48a5277f870a4c5707df7

Download Method
===============
Via BitTorrent:

Get virtual machine torrent file

kubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386-vmware-20100429.7z.torrent

from

http://happypenguin.tw/dl/vmware/i386/ubuntu/desktop/

then use your favorite client to download.

Suggested BitTorrent clients are

For Windows users:

µTorrent
http://www.utorrent.com/

For Linux, BSD and Mac OS X users:

Transmission
http://www.transmissionbt.com/

To unpack the virtual appliance, you need
7-Zip file archiver.

Please visit

for more information.

Description
===========
This is a VMware virtual machine from Happy Penguin, Taiwan
(http://happypenguin.tw/) for evaluating Ubuntu 10.04 KDE4
desktop edition.

Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) is a Linux-based operating
system that provides the latest in free and open source software.

System Requirements
===================
* Standard x86-compatible or x86-64-compatible PC
* Processor speed – 2.0 GHz or faster
* Memory – 1 GB minimum (2 GB recommended).
You must have enough memory to run the host operating system,
the virtual machine, and applications on the host and guest
operating systems.
* Linux, Windows or Mac OS X as host operating systems

Compatible Products
===================
VMware Player 2.5 or later
VMware ACE 2.5 or later
VMware ESX Server 4.0 or later
VMware Fusion 2.0 or later
VMware Server 2.0 or later
VMware Workstation 6.5 or later

HOWTO
=====
Just download the virtual machine archive, unpack it, open with
the free VMware player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/)
and start running!

Appliance details
=================
Processors: 2 CPUs (can add more later)
Memory: 768 MB (can add more later)
Hardisk: 8.0 GB, dynamic (can add additional hardisks)
Ethernet: NAT (can be changed later)
VMware Tools: Not installed (can install if needed)
Resolution: 800x600 (can be changed later)

Recompile official Ubuntu Linux kernel for optimization,
makes it more compact and virtual machine friendly.

It should now run faster and need less resources than
the one comes with Ubuntu distribution.

VMware Command Line Tools (vmw, vmftp, vmshrink) included,
which means you don't have to install the whole VMware Tools
if all you need is basic virtual machine maintenance and
communication between guest and host OS. You can still
install VMware Tools later if you want to.

Default Language
=================
First time when you start up Ubuntu Linux, it will
prompt you to select a default language. If you just
press "OK" without specify anything, it will use
English as default.

Please note that, if you choose such as Chinese,
Japanese, or Korean as your default language, it will
automatically install additional fonts needed during
setup process. Depends on Internet connection speed,
it may take up to 3 or 10 minutes to download those
fonts. Please be patient.

Network settings
================
IP, DNS, default gateway: auto configuring on boot by DHCP

That's it.

Have fun :)

Hi lichenghsu!

Would it be possible to get the image on a different way? I tried already to download the VM via BitTorrent since a week but got no seeders...

I could offer the community to place the image on my RapidShare account and post the link here so that there is a second download source available. Would'nt that be great? ;-)

Best regards,
Berlech

I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a VMWare virtual machine (after already having installed Ubuntu 9.02 on a VMWare virtual machine without any problem), and 10.04 won't recognize my keyboard, so after Ubuntu boots, I can't type in my PW. Tried unplugging and plugging my keyboard just to make sure. No luck. Went back to 9.02 and it works fine. Did you encounter anything like that along the way?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi, Berlech

Thanks for your suggestion :)

I know BitTorrent is not that convenient for some people. Distributing virtual machines via BitTorrent just because my bandwidth is not good enough to upload to, for example, RapidShare.

My upload speed is only 24Kb/sec. :P

It takes too much time to upload a virtual machine for me.

BitTorrent is the best way I could share with community.

I will try to upload virtual machines to somewhere convenient to download directly.

But it will take a long time, maybe one week after distributed via BitTorrent.

I will try.

Thanks for your suggestion. :)

Hi, cvolpe

Nope, I didn't encounter such situation, but I heard of it. Some people can't type anything when they try to login.

You can try this:

Keyboard Problem with Ubuntu 10.04 Login Window on VMware (http://www.clickonf5.org/linux/keyboard-problem-ubuntu-1004-login-vmware/7163)

One of my friends has uploaded this virtual machine into depositfiles.com for me.

For people not familiar with P2P, here's the direct download link in Deposit Files web site:

Have fun :)

No more BitTorrent, and no more Deposit Files, you can download the virtual machine directly from sourceforge.net now. :)
