I am planning on upgrading my Ubuntu NAS server. Currently it runs Ubuntu 8.10 and houses 6 x Western Digital Green Power hard drives on an old Pentium IV computer with 768Mb of RAM. I'd like something faster and quieter. What do you think about the following:
Case: Fractal Design Define R2
Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-H55-UD3H
CPU: Intel Core i3 530
RAM: Kingston 2GB Kit (2x1GB)
DVD drive: LG GH22NP20 22xDVD+
Ubuntu: I assume I might as well wait for 10.04.
Disk (which I already have): 2x1.0 TB WD EADS, 2x1.5 TB WD EADS, 2x2.0 WD EADS

each drive is mirrored using MDADM (Linux Software RAID)
I have a few questions:
First: does anybody know of any incompatibility issues that I should watch out for in the above config?

Second: Any idea how much power this would draw? The Pentium IV machine draws about 70 Watts when all 6 hard drives are active so it might be old and slow but it is quite energy efficient. I am hoping the new config would be at least no worse.

Thirdly: I did look into using an Atom motherboard for lower energy consumption but I just couldn't find anything that would control 6 SATA disks. Does anybody have another suggestion for a Motherboard / CPU / SATA controller combo which uses less power? (CPU must be Intel).
