Hi,
I've been creating some tutorials in Wink ( http://www.debugmode.com/wink ).
They are at http://www.majikstreet.org/tutorials

What tutorials would you like to see (more basic ones please - not like 3ddesktop or XGL or similar)?

Great idea!

I guess newbies could use tutorials about:
* How to install Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows (the whole proccess with resize windows partition etc).
* How to make windows partitions mount on boot up.
* How to install/uninstall programs with Synaptic.
* How to add stuff and do other tricks with the panels.
* How to use workspaces and other features newbies are not used to from Windows.
* Nautilus tips and tricks (list view, browser mode, editable address field and other more or less hidden options).

Thanks for the ideas.. the dual booting issues are advanced, and there is already a tutorial on video.google.com about that.

Installing programs I can show. Workspaces, sure. panels, ok. nautilius tips I dunno about, but I can research that..

Great idea :)

Somethings I would like to see (not for me personally but for computer newbs like my mum & some friends)

basic things that many of us take for granted like:

setting up pop email in a client like Evolution / thunderbird

making new folders (with emblems) to keep things like docs, music etc neat in your home folder

perhaps a video on customizing the desktop - say,

downloading a picture, then changing it to the desktop background.

next, you could change the theme / window boarders & icons & perhaps finish the video with a link to a site where a user might download more themes / desktops so they can really make their computer their own

The gnome-art program would be perfect to show in that video, it is a user friendly way to get Gnome themes and wallpapers.

how are you using wink to capture the frames, it won't capture them automatically for me?

There is only one minor problem with this; using flash locks out the 64 bit users. It is a PIA to get flash working on 64 bit. I would prefer something that did these tutorials in ogg/theora format, downloadable.

A tutorial on installing flash would get round this :D

It might be nice to create a new user and create the tutorials with the new user on your computer. That way the environment will look just like what a newcomer to ubuntu sees.

Also, in your nmap tutorial, you paste a command, but it is way too fast for anyone to read. Unless I missed something, in which case I'd argue it should be more obvious :)

Great idea and good job so far though!

It's an great idea indeed Majikstreet. Up till now I am still in the process of making my own Dutch *nix website. I'm am targetting to make a news-only website but applications such as WINK can make it very easy and simple for me (and others) to make and collect tutorials.

How to correctly search the forums for help.

thanks for all the ideas, suggestions, and comments :)

with wink, you can right click on the icon in the notification area and tell it to do the timed capture which takes a shot every n seconds that you set up when you did a new one.. my advice would be to watch the tutorials in the program - go to Help then the first tutorial..

I know that in the nmap one I paste the command too fast.. I added a link to explain the command at the bottom of the video.

I actually have a new user (if you have seen my full desktop there is a shortcut to an NX session called "demoboy". If I use wink in my session it only captures a white screen. If I use wink in the demoboy session I think it becomes very slow - I don't remember what exactly happened.. I would log out and log into that account, but some issues with my computer prevent me from doing that - if I log out I always get "Cannot Display Video Mode" and I was told buying a video card would remedy that, but the video card never worked because of the dell that I have.

As far as I know, Wink can not output to ogg/theora or similar. I have figured out pyvnc2swf (and can put audio in there :D ) and I believe it can export to mpeg or avi or similar. One limitation with pyvnc2swf is that it can't do the text boxes and stuff like that. I guess with the audio it's ok. But, my voice is hard to understand and there is a lot of noise in the video - another issue with that is that I have to manually record the audio with "Sound Recorder" as I am making the video, import the wav into audacity, make it louder and trim the ends, then export it as wav again, and convert it to mp3 with lame. Then I must run a little editing program that came with pyvnc2swf to add the audio. And if I run the noise removal filter in audacity, I end up being an alien. (Probably my fault - I'm not very good with audacity.) (Exporting the mp3 from audacity would be easier, but there is something with the tags that causes the editing program not to work.)

edit: yes, bored2k, that sounds like a wonderful idea :D
