Hi,

On the 1st of May, starting at 14.00 pdt Second Life time we are celebrating the release of Lucid Lynx on Second Life. With the help of one of our Ubuntu Linux group members, we even have a whole sim available for this event.

There will be live music, a dj and some speakers, special clothing and other gadgets for the event. If you want to help out or just visit the events, you are welcome at:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Sana%20OSean7/101/101/23

There is also a group called Ubuntu release parties, that you can join if you want to be active within the organization.

I've never actually bothered with Second Life but this is a good excuse to check it out.

I did go on there as a flying fat naked man just to embarrass my mum in front of all her friends, that's the only time I've ever been on there ;).

Is that accessible without a paid account? I seem to remember there was a paid and non-paid version. I've never been on it, but a friend of mine does business on Second Life.

I just downloaded Second Life for Linux last weekend, and it didn't require any payment for a basic account. Using it I was able to get to the Ubuntu Release Party site last night by just clicking the link.

I haven't checked to see what time it'll be in Central Time Zone where I'm at, but if it's after work I may stop by.

Maybe this would be a good time to ask where the hell you're 'supposed' to put Second Life in the Ubuntu filesystem. As it is, it's just hanging around in a directory in my home folder, which is where it unpacked. But... but ... but. That's where data goes, right? I'm sure there's a better place to put it. Thanks.

I'll try to drop in on your metaverse party and see if I can get the hang of this SL thing. Cheers.

Yeah there's no installation, just unpack and run.
I think some files might be going to your home folder though, /home/.secondlife/ it's probably for preferences and the textures from the 'game'. In the options you can choose how much cache you want to allocate to the textures and such, you can also clean the cache.

So if you have multiple people using the same computer and you put it somewhere all-accessible (/usr/share/SecondLife/.. or /opt/SecondLife/..) you won't be able to go into your own account each time, you'll have to specify which account to log in?

As it turns out there is an install script that I gather does little more than dumping it all into /opt/secondlife-install/

I eventually figured out that

sudo rbash install.shdoes the trick. I used to be a hand on the Amiga CLI but I've since lost my shell mojo.

It seems to work but it also generates an error, complaining about there being a"/" in the filename.

Anyways, I digress...
