I know it's been said many times before, but I really think 2010 will be the year of Ubuntu, especially after the release of 10.04. It is awesome.

This is the year of the Tiger according to the Chinese Lunar calender. Is there any tiger in South Africa? Yeah! I see Ubuntu is getting better since I install 8.10.

The year of the Linux desktop has come and gone, I believe, since it's already reached a certain outrageous amount of usefulness that's ignored because we don't have native Photoshop and all the games under the Sun. But Linux as an Operating System is currently exceeding anything you'd really expect from one, and it's perfectly useful with the apps that it comes with. It's just people feel the need to use something else, and in some cases it's easier to use something from Adobe or Autodesk that isn't on Linux, yet, or compatible with Wine.

But yeah, we've come a long way, and due to the continuing diversity of computer operating systems, I think people will end up using a mixture of Operating Systems and Creative Suites, not just Adobe's. I don't see anyone retaining the majority in the future, but since Linux is free and excels in everything that a basic Operating System can do, the applications being refined and the consumers becoming more aware is all you need.

And really, it's just that people only know of Windows as a Desktop Operating System, or they don't really know what an Operating System is because they have thought, until netbooks, PCs have Windows, Macs have OSX, and you choose an OS when you buy a computer and there's no turning back. That's what people think, and they think, EVEN TODAY, that Linux is a command line tool, since there's no one in the public eye rebutting those claims.

That sounds good.

But do people really think Linux is a command line tool? Never heard anything like that...

But the way to get more people use ubuntu is to tell people about it, After i started with ubuntu a few months ago both my Father and Sister use ubuntu now, without my help they would still use Windows cause they do not have the knowledge to switch OS.

I know you were joking but I can still sense a hint of a misunderstanding. Sooooo, lets make it clear.

Maya peoples have never predicted that the world will END at 2012. They've predicted though the world how we know it at the moment will end. I big change or something, who knows.

Due to that ridiculous movie (2012) even lots of the Mayas are confused now and believe that it is the end of the world and because of this there has been found, for example, an increase of Mayas joining suicide cults in Central America and Mexico.

ps. Slightly off-topic but I just had to let it out :D

yea... Present day Mayans aren't like the ancient Mayans, and we have the Spanish Catholics to thank for that. The ancient Mayans who didn't convert to Christianity were often slaughtered. So the Mayans were thinned and spread out and as a result they lost touch with their heritage over time. So this misunderstanding from them is of no surprise.

Anywho back to topic, The year of the Desktop Linux will probably be when it reaches a 51% market share. This might be a while.

That's what people think, and they think, EVEN TODAY, that Linux is a command line tool, since there's no one in the public eye rebutting those claims.

Indeed. It was until about a year ago that I thought Linux was a command-line tool, until I started researching it and asking questions (I have several friends who use Ubuntu exclusively). As it turns out, ever since I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition, I've been using it more and more, and Windows less and less...

I do hope that Ubuntu continues to grow, and that people start looking into it more. The problem is, most people who buy PCs/Macs want them to work out of the box and don't want to take the time to learn how to do maintenance or even change the theme on them; they only want it for gaming or the internet. I have an uncle who has literally gone through at least three laptops in the last two years, simply because he couldn't be bothered to protect it from viruses and to run a defrag/disk cleanup every week or so. And the sad thing is, a lot of people are like that. So when they hear that Linux is "just a command-line tool" (which we all know that isn't true), they immediately think "nah, I'll stick to Windows/Mac, since it doesn't require any maintenance". What they don't realize is that that's probably the biggest myth of computing; ALL operating systems NEED to be maintained. And honestly, I think it's harder to maintain Windows than it is to maintain Ubuntu.

The calendar ends there. That's ALL !!

The end of the mayan calendar does not signify the end of the world, or any "big change" whatever...

Any more than the end of the calendar, currently on my wall, means that the world will end on December 31st, 2010.

I honestly wouldn't get my hopes up for Ubuntu gaining market share this year. As much as I hate to say it, Linux may NEVER take over Windows or Apple market share. It's all in the hands of 3rd party developers and I have no faith in them. :-k

You are right, but as far as I am concerned the Maya calender ends AND due to this the Mayas predicted that the world how we know it will end.

But year 2010, hopefully more people will understand the benefits of the Ubuntu. I promise to promote it this year much more actively!

Same thing.

It makes no more sense to predict the end of the world -because- of the end of that calendar, than it does to predict the end of the world because of the end of the calendar on my wall.

Linux has already surpassed MS and Apple on the server side of things, but on the desktop there are just too many machines out there already running MS to really expect Linux to get a "market share." However, I think that 10.04 will give future hardware developers, especially in the mobile/netbook segment, a good solution and drive prices down because there is no licensing to worry about. It's a different market than when netbooks first came out; with the economic downturn shoppers are much more frugal. 2010 might see widespread Ubuntu adoption precisely because of this.

And even at that, the mayan long count calendar like the rest of the mayans calenders go in circles so once it reaches the end it just goes back to its beginning.
