(If you don't like long intros, skip to the last paragraph)

I have been using Ubuntu since 7.10 Gutsy, and I love how easy it is for someone to install, set up, and configure their system with Ubuntu. Over my spring break, I decided to temporarily switch from Ubuntu/Linux Mint to Arch Linux, a mostly "make it yourself" distribution. As clean and simple my setup is now with Arch, I went through a lot of trouble to get my printer working. My printer was a combo scanner/printer, and I had to set a custom udev rule for it to be detected as a printer by CUPS.

On Ubuntu/Linux Mint, I've never had to set a custom rule like this. How does Ubuntu do this? Is there some package or configuration I need?
