I have a question. My update manager is is giving me the option to upgrade to Ubuntu
10.04 and i think that i will accept this proposal but would like to know that If i upgrade my os what will happen to my data....... will it be lost or will it remain the as it is....
Could any one explain the process......

Your data should remain as is, but I would back up just in case. IMO, you should just wait until it is released this thursday and do a fresh install.

Your data will be preserved.
It's always a good idea to backup important stuff though.

The data would not be lost. The kernel, Gnome, applications would be updated. I would suggest you to wait till April 29, that day 10.04 LTS final would be released. Right now it is a release candidate going into further development.

Always back up, and I say wait till it is released. It is very stable at this point, but don't want broken stuff to appear. Give it a few more days, then upgrade. But Back Up First!! Also if you have a slow connection it will take a while. It usually updates around 2,000 files or more.
