I figured that I should report on my find of an Ubuntu-friendly laptop: the Acer Aspire 5740G-6979. I bought it on Newegg about a month ago.

I'm running Lucid Lynx release candidate with no issues. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 runs great and was detected on first startup along with the Catalyst drivers. The wireless adapter is an Atheros AR928X and was detected at startup with no issues. I even installed Cheese to test out the webcam, and the image was correctly positioned -- no upside-down picture :)

I decided to keep Win 7 so I can still watch instantly on Netflix. Hopefully someday we'll get that fixed.

Good luck,
Tom

I am planing to buy this laptop, but I am confused of the ATI driver on linux, does it works well with the HD vidoes (720p & 1080i) ? please erase my confusion, because most people say that nvidia is better on linux than ATI but I cant see a budget laptop with a nvidia GPU.

I haven't had any problems at all. It works great.
