View Full Version : In your opinion (swap space)

If you have a text based system(ubuntu minimal install), do you think it's necessary to put any swap space? especially since the computer it's on has 3gb of ram.

No not really, I have 4GB of RAM, and 4GB of swap, on a GUI, on the Swap space is never used.

Assuming you never run anything that's going to use all your memory, you only need swap if you need to hibernate, since that saves the RAM image in the swap area.

You may need to Hibernate your PC and need these Swap,
you maybe need to use a DataBase program that needs these Swap,
maybe you run headless virtualizaton and need these Swap,
never knows, whatever Swap is optional.

What if you have no swap and you hibernate?

if... if you run out of ram the system will crash. - Hence swap.
