So, I finally built my first desktop computer (you can see how long I have been wanting to do this by this thread: Building a Desktop (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1090170)).

The parts I used are:
--Antec Two Hundred Mid-Tower (http://www.jr.com/antec/pe/ANT_15253/)
--ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131398)
--AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808)
--G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory X 1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231252)
--Antec EA 430D 430W EarthWatts Green Series PSU (http://www.jr.com/antec/pe/ANT_EA430D/)
--Western Digital WD5000CSRTL Caviar Green 500GB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (http://www.jr.com/western-digital/pe/WD_WD5000CSRTL/)

It cost me $540 overall, including shipping.

I have to say, after building my own computer, I will probably never buy a pre-assembled one again (aside from laptops).

Here's a link to some more pics of my build [Facebook]: PC Build (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=34798970&l=e3df42c51b&id=55011417)

Nice. The processor is especially good. At first I thought you didn't get enough RAM (I'd say a minimum of 4 GB nowadays). However, since you're using Linux, which can work with less than 92 MB if need be, and because the motherboard will give you plenty of room to expand, I think you made a good choice.

I've refurbished some systems, but haven't done a full-out build yet. I'll probably do one this summer if I find the time/money.

Good luck with your new system.

Also, is that screenshot in Xubuntu? What do you need XFCE for? You could run Vista on that thing! :P

I assumed the same thing. Oddly enough, though, 10.04 is using up to 1.2 GB of RAM for no apparent reason that I can find. Not sure if it's that memory leak bug or what, but I shall look into it.

I've always liked Xfce and Xubuntu since I found Linux so I run it (and I enjoy being as efficient as possible, regardless of my system specs for some reason :P )

You didn't get a Graphic card? That will be an icing on the cake. Give you plenty of eye candy.

I'm not really a PC gamer and I never mess with Compiz anymore, so I skipped out on the graphics card. The onboard card works fine for me.

i will definitely be doing this just for the experience of building my own rig ,when i get some money, but thanks to linux i don't see myself needing a new computer for awhile

Yep, that's half of what took me so long to do it. I had a dual-core laptop with 2 GB of RAM hooked up to my 20 inch monitor and Linux needed no more power than that. I enjoyed the learning process of building my own and now I won't need a new computer for a *long* time!
