Right now, I have a FreeNAS server running a 500GB ATA drive formatted in UFS. I'm switching to Ubuntu for my NAS server and am wondering if I should reformat to an ext filesystem to improve performance.

So here are my questions;

1) Should I reformat to another file system, and if so, which one would you reccomend?
2) If I should reformat, is there any way I could do it without transferring all my files to a different drive (e.g. Could I shrink my UFS partition as small as possible without losing data, make another partition, transfer all the files to the new partition, and then grow the new one over the old UFS?)
