Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.4 RC1 on my Asus 1000HE. It was running ok, but with no splash screen or any composite effects. Also (personally) I'm more a fan of a traditional ubuntu desktop experience as opposed to the Netbook launcher.

So I disabled the launcher, reverted UNR to a more traditional gnome-like setup. Installed Compiz, and hit restart, because I wanted to see after the "Searching for drivers" message had made any difference in that regards. Wobbly windows and so on seemed to be working fine.

Nope. And worse, now the computer hangs on a black screen.

I select Ubuntu from the Grub menu.
A white cursor blinks.
Screen goes black.
White cursor reappears but does not blink this time. It stays like this.
If I push the power button the splash screen appears briefly before the computer switches off.

Help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

ps. I was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.4, and 9.10, with full composite effects running prior to this (I've had this netbook since June 09) and have never had an issue before.
I'm running in low-graphics mode now, which I selected from the Grub menu
