Probably a stupid question, but it was one that was asked of me. I've heard of people who have Linux boxes running without restart for months at a time. ... Is there a granddaddy machine somewhere at a university or something that hasn't been powered off or rebooted for years and years?

There's some kind of website for listing poeple's super long uptimes; someone posted it here a few months back... but I'm too lazy to search right now.

I've got a smoothwall server sitting under my desk that managed just over a year before we had a power cut :)

After some googling I found this site with some cool stats:
http://users.tpg.com.au/adsln4yb/sunrecords.html

Too bad only that stuff like "Furthest a server has been thrown by an admin" is unknown, cause that's the stuff you really want to know ;)

I think there should be different classes of uptime. Ex.: everyday desktop, file servers, firewall box...etc.

Naturally, you would think the everyday desktop workstation would experience more reboots than others.

It would be cool to see if a laptop could be left on with out problems, and have a five year uptime that includes using it on a daily bases too..

I know of a server, running with Slackware and non-stop since over nine years now. Not bad at all. :)

What about the shortest uptime Linux machines?? :guitar:

A friend of mine runs his TV Dreambox stuff with linux - that one freezes once in every hour.

Mine right now goes only 5-10 minutes without freezing. It's ugly.
