I need some more storage for my new baby and I have decided to purchase a 16 gb microsdhc card for it.
In my scope I have a Kingston class 10 type one. That means promised 10 mb/sec transfer rate. Now for my question: is that way over the top and could I just use a class 6 card instead?

It all depends what you want to do with the Storage. For movies, Music files and such it should be good enough to go for 6Mb/s.
I use a SanDisk 15Mb/s 16GB SDHC card for my encrypted home directory and other protected. And that has a somewhat slow feel to it (more when docked in my EEEPC, than when hooked up to my dual core Athlon machhine). Next time around I will get something faster for this.

It is only for listening to music and watching videos on the device.

It is quite expensive, will probably get the class 6 one then.

Sandisk Class 6 8gb works fast enough for me on HTC hero, surely would work faster with desire having snapdragon.

Massive overkill. High speed SD cards like that are really only useful in things like a digital SLR using a high resolution, where you want to write a large file and have it viewable straight away, or want to take lots of photos in really quick succession.

I've watched episodes of TV shows about 500MB in size on my GP2X Wiz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X_Wiz) using the cheapest class 6 SDHC card I could find on Newegg and they played fine.
