I have some money that I want to donate, but I don't know what to donate to. I either want to donate to a dying project or something I use daily. Any suggestions?

Check what you are using then donate to the one which needs it the most.

Or you could donate to me because I'm trying to start a shop selling (100%) sacred (by holy hand touch to the head) chinchillas.

Giving it to swoll1980 is probably the best idea so far. LOL

I've never been big on donating money. Many times the money doesn't directly go to what you think its funding.

But if it has to go to a open source project why not VideoLAN, the makers of VLC: http://www.videolan.org/contribute.html

I'd say donate to something that gives back in other ways then just an product. I don't know who does what, but maybe to the software devs of the one laptop per child thing or something of that sort.

OHHHH GREAT IDEA! How about the Helios Project? They are based out of Austin, TX and they provide free computer's to children of familes that cound not normally afford them on their own. Some times he will even shell out the cash for the internet service every month.

He does this completely out of his own pocket and with donation by his followers. I've actually donated spare computer part to him in the past. The guys is doing some wonderful things in Austin.

aah, you could use the joys of compound interest to grow
your beer fund, like a mighty oak,

cause when you are 21, you'll know all about the perils of
compound interest.

How about saving it or investing it? You know... for when you're old and would rather retire on your savings than greet people in Walmart for sustenance.

it would be kind of strange to choose to donate to some group of developers if you can give the same money somewhere that can save lives

I own a Linux computer store based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We support Ubuntu and other Linux operating systems as much as possible, and we always hold some sort of release party and give out tons of cds. They are available regularly. We are not making much money, as we want to be competitive and have the best prices, but really that just means we don't have money to support ourselves or Linux. The thought is that either we start doing really well or we close down the shop. We even had to trade in our very professional website for a basic one (that I really dislike) because it was a bit too expensive to keep up with. If you are interested, PM me. I can promise you that it's not a joke, and that we won't just spend the money on ourselves. Anything, even a dollar, can help us to live longer and help more people discover Linux. On top of that, we are the only shop in town that works on pre-XP computers. I understand (and promote) the need for advanced hardware and software, but for some people, it's all they need, and it's all they can afford.

no matter how legit the request might be, asking for money from a stranger over the internets seems a little strange, doesn't it?
